Creative Rights kicks off its annual fundraising campaign with its latest project, Origins and Endings: Experiments in Collaboration. Thirteen artists were selected in early 2013 as participants for this experiment.  Mostly strangers, the collection includes painters, sculptors, designers, actors, aerial performers, and more.  Once selected for participation, the artists were randomly placed into four collectives and given three months to create new work together.  Each collective is responsible for creating an installation and corresponding performance piece that is inspired by the theme of Origins and Endings.  The artwork will be the focus of the evening and guests will have the opportunity to speak directly with the collectives and interact with the historic space. Once a film production studio, Jam Handy plays host to many arts and culture events in Detroit including, Detroit Soup and productions from Creative Rights client, The Hinterlands.  The building is named after Henry Jamison ‘Jam’ Handy, 1904 Olympic Medalist, filmmaker, and producer.  One of his better known films created at the studio, Detroit: City on The Move (1965), was a promotional film made for the city of Detroit in its bid for the Olympic Games.  Now owned and operated by Simeon Heyer, Jam Handy presents Detroit with another deconstructed playground for the arts. // TICKETS // $15 at the door.

On Friday, September 14th Creative Rights will host their first public show, In Progress, featuring over 40 artists and performers from Ann Arbor and Detroit who will exhibit works that are currently in the process of being created. As our guest, you will have the opportunity to explore the gallery space, watch live performances, and speak to local artists about their creative process. Many of those involved are Creative Rights clients – dancers, playwrights, metal smiths, installation artists, painters, musicians, actors, and more – currently benefiting from the services and support of our organization.

8PM: Live music by the Echo String Quartet
9PM: Brian Carbine, Megan Montgomery, Colby Halloran, Luna Alexander and others perform shortened segments of their works including dance, movement, play excerpts, and more.

On Saturday, September 15th, In Progress will be open to the public and will begin with extended versions of Friday’s performances as well as live music from Hush, Love, Deastro, Ivan Grass, Portsman, Douglaslaneallen, and others. The evening will be a celebration of the local arts communities in both Ann Arbor and Detroit, and will give attendees an introduction to Creative Rights and the impact its services are making on the creative community.

In Progress is a two night benefit hosted by Creative Rights, an Ann Arbor-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. On September 14 – 15 at 1250 N. Main St., Ann Arbor, upwards of forty artists from Ann Arbor and Detroit will show works that are currently in the process of being designed and created. Many of the artists are Creative Rights clients – they are dancers, playwrights, metal smiths, installation artists, painters, musicians, actors, and more. Each night will begin accompanied by live music, where attendees can explore the gallery space and speak to the artists about their creative process. Each night a portion of the evening will consist of live segments of the performing artists’ work, after which attendees will have a chance to converse about the future direction of the pieces.

On Friday, September 14th, from 8pm-11pm, a benefit reception will be held to celebrate Creative Rights’ first, but not last, show. In cocktail attire, Creative Rights will bring in the night with a string quartet, which will be followed by a variety of performances and a live jazz band. Tickets for this distinct reception will be available on our website for $35. Noted artists, designers, professors, and creative professionals will be on site to participate and help facilitate a unique, constructive, art-oriented conversation.

On Saturday, September 15th, the show will be open to the public for $5 at the door and will run from 7pm-2am. It will begin with extended performances, including dance, performance art, and excerpts from original plays. The performances will be followed by live music from Hush, Love, Ivan Grass, Portsman, Douglaslaneallen, and others.

Each evening will be a celebration of the local arts communities in both Ann Arbor and Detroit, and will give attendees an introduction to Creative Rights and the impact its services are making on the creative community. “It’s the public that makes it possible for Creative Rights to get involved at an early stage and push forward large-scale arts projects, such as providing mixed use performance, studio, and event space in the community,” says Brandon Weiner, Executive Director of Creative Rights. “In Progress is a way for both Creative Rights and all of the artists involved to say thanks. It’s a showcase for the community of all the exciting work that its artists are doing.”

Creative Rights is an Ann Arbor and Detroit based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing free long-term legal representation and educational programs to the creative community. Creative Rights strives to be a sanctuary for the social and artistic imagination, with In Progress being the first of many showcases of the innovative and exciting work being done by its clients and supporters.

Join us for the In Progress Benefit Reception Friday, September 14th, 2012 from 8pm-11pm. We’ll be featuring the works of over forty Creative Rights clients and supporters. All ticket proceeds will go directly to Creative Rights, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Creative Rights is the only organization in the nation to offer free, long term, comprehensive legal representation for artists, businesses, and organizations in the creative community. We seek to build a bridge between the creative communities of Ann Arbor and Detroit, not to “revitalize,” but instead to create a flourishing artistic/entrepreneurial environment to be emulated across the globe.

Your support is vital for Creative Rights to continue providing artists, entrepreneurs, and organizations with the support system necessary to take on innovative projects, to continue to push the curve, and to continue making the Ann Arbor/Detroit area  a trendsetter in promoting entrepreneurial growth and collaboration between academic institutions, community development organizations, and professionals.

Unlike other non-profits that create works of art themselves, or provide grants to artists and businesses, most of Creative Rights’ work takes place behind the scenes. And due to the nature of our services, both legally and in our coalition-building efforts, we’re often unable to disclose the details of our work to the public. The situation is only exacerbated by the fact that many of our current large-scale projects will not be completed for over a year or longer.

In Progress will provide attendees with a rare opportunity to experience our work. Every artist displaying work will be in attendance. We hope this will give attendees the chance to not only view the works of our clients, but will also provide an opportunity to hear exactly the impact Creative Rights has had on their work and their ability to pursue the work they love in the future.

May 15, 2012 – Creative Rights Director, Brandon Weiner, gave a lecture to faculty and students of the Art Institute of California-Hollywood on how the law affects creators. After the lecture, there was a workshop on various legal topics, such as: copyright, fair use, contracts, business entities, trademark, and digital rights. Students and faculty from a broad range of artistic disciplines received one-on-one counseling. Current and anticipated projects were presented, providing an avenue to identify potential legal issues and discuss alternative business models.

May 18 & 19, 2012 – Join Brendalinda Performance Collaborative for “Brash Menagerie,” a one of a kind show featuring elements of dance, performance art, film and theater. The performance takes place at Charlie LaCroix’s Le Pop Art Gallery and examines the shrinking space between “human” and “animal” existence. The performance starts at 10p, but make sure to get there early and check out the gallery, which currently features the works of Spanish street artist Xuan Alyfe.

April 6, 2012 – Creative Rights partnered with artist and professor of architecture Catie Newell to offer a unique opportunity to students in Catie’s master of architecture thesis course at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College. Creative Rights, and its team of law student attorneys, delivered presentations on contracts, property torts, and copyright in architecture. After hearing Catie’s students give a brief description of their projects, CR law student attorneys paired off and spent the next hour and a half delving into the details of each project. CR law student attorneys pointed out scenarios that could increase liability and provided legal information pertaining to trespass, vandalism, contracts, ownership vs. possession, adverse possession, and copyright.
